The revival of Chris Hampton?s 1970?s play The Philanthropist is arriving at the American Airlines Theatre in New York in March. The play is Hampton?s comical response to French playwright Moli?re?s The Misanthrope, which was written in the 17th Century. The Philanthropist will be starring Matthew Broderick, the two time Tony Award-winning actor and veteran of the stage who has also been popularized through his roles in films such as War Games (1983), Election (2000), The Cable Guy (1996), and of course the 1986 hit film Ferris Bueller?s Day Off. In The Misanthrope Moli?re created a role that was entirely new to the stage. Alceste is a man so noble and so high in his purposes and principles that he ends up offending or hurting nearly everyone but his one staunchly loyal friend, Philinte.
Alceste is a man who is estranged from the world at large by his undying devotion to the high and noble cause of truth, determining that it should be spoken at all times, even if it results in the loss of a friendship or in being sued for his ungracious, though truthful, behavior. In contrast is Matthew Broderick, playing the part of Philip, who is entirely and completely the opposite of Alceste. He is a man who is entirely wrapped up in the academic world, but yet is entirely out of it at the same time. He absolutely refuses to become embroiled in the avid criticism that his colleagues engage in, but seems to thoroughly enjoy and find good in everything that he reads. In the opening scene of the play he brings one colleague to absolute frustration at his complete inability to provide constructive criticism. The play is set in the academic community of a world-famous college, well-known for the cerebral nature of its lecturers.
It is, therefore, given the only setting in which it could possibly occur, making it altogether believable. This is the true genius of the play, that Hampton took an almost unbelievable situation and sets it in the only setting where it is a conceivable scenario. Because as the play unfolds, it is discovered that not only is Philip somewhat out of touch with human nature, but he is also out of touch with the affairs of the world. And this unawareness of the world rises to the point of being completely unaware that a person of high political position has been assassinated. Staring alongside Matthew Broderick in this extraordinarily entertaining play, are Anna Madeley, Tate Ellington, Jennifer Mudge and Samantha Soule. This is certainly one of the must-see plays for the coming spring, so be sure to get your The Philanthropist Broadway tickets as soon as possible.
