If you have ever needed to reinstall your operating system (the most common being Windows, of course), then you may have been greeted by an unpleasant surprise as you discover that you are unable to connect to your router through your Ethernet. This occurs because after having done a completely fresh reinstall of your operating system, your computer will still, in all likelihood, be missing crucial Ethernet Controller drivers that would allow your computer to interface with your router through the Ethernet port.
The symptom that would give you a clue as to what exactly is going on is a small yellow icon of a question mark next to your Ethernet Controller when you view your devices under Device Manager. This article will show you what to do when you?re missing crucial Ethernet controller drivers, and how you can resolve this particular problem in double-quick time.
The fact is that your Ethernet controller drivers can go missing even if you haven?t done a fresh reinstallation of your operating system. Any occurrence that can compromise your system files, be it a virus attack or a serious registry issue, can corrupt your Ethernet drivers and of course other essential system files. If your registry has been compromised, then one of the solutions you can turn to in order to resolve your Ethernet issues is to first look at how you can restore the integrity of your registry. Because the registry is the proverbial brain of your computer, it is important for you to ensure that the registry does not in turn compromise the operations of other components within the system.
If you suspect your registry being the contributor of the problem, then do a complete registry cleanup, using either your operating system?s onboard registry cleanup program, or other trusted third party software that can help you restore the registry?s integrity. Most third party software can be found online for free, so it is really a cost-effective solution that you can turn to anytime.
Another possible solution is to download the necessary Ethernet controller drivers. Because the drivers could have either been corrupted or even missing to begin with, you need to install the latest drivers in order for your Ethernet to be operational.
There are two ways in which you can ensure that you have the latest updated drivers.
The first is the most common solution that a lot of users would turn to, and that is to manually update the drivers on their own. There are a number of third party sites out there that provide the latest driver updates, and these are usually collectives of computer enthusiasts who are keen on helping others such as yourself in resolving such matters. But before you can attempt to download the latest drivers for your Ethernet, you will need to know the make and model of your network controller, and this can be done either by referring to your computer?s tech specs, or dismantling your CPU and getting into the innards of your computer.
Another solution you might be interested in is to do a free driver scan that will detect the various devices in your computer, and then it will tell you which drivers are required or if the correct drivers have been installed on your computer.
So you see, resolving missing Ethernet controller drivers is not as hard as you might think. All it takes is a little effort and discretion on your part.
