There are many times that issues come up with a computer, and tech support needs to come out and fix it. Sometimes however, the technical support person either doesn’t have the time to travel out to the site, or they simply don’t want to. Either way, remote network support is one way to solve this problem. But what is remote network support?

Many people aren’t going to believe this, but it is quite possible to connect to another computer and control its desktop remotely. It will be as if you are standing there at the computer manipulating the icons, applications, and programs. It really is an amazing technology, and just like with any other software application, there are several different ways to go about it.

The thing is, there are about thirty different remote network support applications out there, and some are better than others. One of the most popular out there is VNC, and the personal edition is perfectly free. If you want to use it on a large network however, you will need to purchase a business edition of the product. Whether or not anyone actually does is a different story.

When Windows XP was released, it came with its own remote desktop software. It worked to a point, but sometimes it would have trouble with the login, but other than that it worked fine so long as you could make it to the desktop. Believe it or not though, this isn’t where remote network support started out.

You might be surprised to learn that remote network support was not always a graphical affair. In fact, it started with a well known program called SSH which was used on the Linux operating system, at least in the public domain at any rate. In those days it was executed through a command line interface, meaning that it required precise control and knowledge of the operating system.

Nowadays it is much simpler to access another computer, even though there are many security precautions in place with most programs. For instance, both computers need to have the remote access software installed in order for it to work. There will be an option to use a password, though if you don’t want a password to be enabled, you can allow direct access.

There are so many advantages to this type of software. It even allows a tech support worker to work on multiple computers at the same time. Overall, it saves money, which is what a good company should be all about. Look into some of the different choices out there and see what will suit you best. Remember that there are many different packages for each software choice, some which will provide options you need, and some that you don’t.

For instance, you will find some of these remote access packages that have the option to chat back and forth between computers which can help in tech support instances. There are some that will be highly interested in this feature, and some that could care less. It all depends on who you are and what you are doing. So figure out what you need and start shopping.
